Overview

Because of their healing and support spells, priests are one of (if not) the most important classes in Ragnarök Online. While they are normally a supportive class, priests can also solo when using a battle priest build, a Turn Undead build or a Magnus Exorcismus build.

In general, they always can find a party, and most builds can easily reach the maximum level.

Jobchange Guide

See Priest Job Change Guide for detailed information.

Changing into a Priest from an Acolyte requires the player to complete a number of tasks:

  • Exorcism and Temptation Tests
  • Purity Test
  • Pilgrimages

After completing these tests, the player will be transformed into a Priest. This mostly takes place inside of the Prontera Church.

Builds

The differences between Priest builds are generally who and where they will support; Battle and exorcist builds support themselves, WoE builds support in WoE, and full support in PvM situations.

Priest builds are to a large extent a matter of personal preference and by no means are the following builds set in stone. The example stat builds in particular have almost no equipment listed alongside them in the calculator, whereas in practice one should plan their final build around the equipment they have access to as well as desired leveling locations (like Sphinx04 for TU priests).

Some stats are presented as "total"s (including buffs, gear, pets, and Job bonuses) because they give certain bounuses at specific increments.

  • STR - Significant melee ATK bonuses at increments of 10.
  • INT - SP Regen +1 at increments of 6. Min MATK bonus at increments of 7 and max MATK bonus at increments of 5.
  • LUK - Perfect Dodge +1 at increments of 10, +1 CRIT at increments of 3 and +1 ATK at increments of 5.

Battle Priest

Base Stats at Level 99:

  • STR: 90+ total
  • AGI: 8x or higher
  • VIT: 1-20
  • INT: 3 - 15
  • DEX: 40+ total
  • LUK: 1 or higher (if crit type)

While certainly not a powerful build, battle priests can be fun and unorthodox characters capable of leveling or farming almost anywhere depending on what type of battle priest they are. Gameplay revolves around buffing oneself with skills like Impositio Manus, Aspersio, Blessing and Increase Agility and then auto attacking enemies. Another benefit of being a battle priest is not needing HP-restoring consumables thanks to the use of the Heal skill. Battle Priests can also utilize offensive buffs (see Priest#Offensive_Buffs) and the Grand Cross weapon to kill high health Undead enemies like Anubis.

There are two primary types of battle priest, CRIT type and STR/AGI type. STR/AGI type battle priests either fight Demon/Undead enemies and make use of the Signum Crucis skill or fight non-Demon/Undead enemies who have low physical defense. CRIT type battle priests on the other hand can fight almost any foe (regardless of defense) through the use of defense-bypassing critical hits, utilizing higher LUK in their build and the Spike weapon.

Support

Full Support (FS) - PvM

Base Stats at Level 99:

  • STR: 1
  • AGI: 1 or more than 80 (see below)
  • VIT: 60-100
  • INT: 70+
  • DEX: 50+ (see below)
  • LUK: 1-9

This is a build with lots of SP, a high Heal and high vitality. There are variations of the above build that different people prefer for different supporting focuses (support slave, duo with a friend, general FS, etc). Some full support priests opt for a compromised build with less VIT and more DEX for better cast time, and some prefer getting AGI to dodge; this focus on dodge was once extremely popular pre-Comodo with 99 INT/99 AGI builds, though it's quite rare now.

PT WoE Support

Base Stats at Level 99:

  • STR: 9+
  • AGI: 1 or 9
  • VIT: 80-100 total (80 only if reaching 100 luk with Gloria and bonuses)
  • INT: 1
  • DEX: 7x or 9x
  • LUK: 10 - 100 total with bonuses/buffs

A Priest built entirely for Pre-trans WoE, it's very difficult to level and often requires to be leeched most if not all the way to level 99. There are two primary variants; One that reaches stun immunity through VIT and 10 total LUK (and can opt for higher DEX), and one that reaches stun immunity through a combination of 100 total LUK (with Gloria) and 80 VIT. Some adjust their VIT and LUK values differently to achieve immunity (as seen here: Stats#VIT). Regardless of which of the two variants or whatever change one makes, stun immunity must be reached because of the Dazzler spam meta. Unlike the FS PvM build, INT is of little value because Heal is not used in WoE and natural SP regeneration is not relevant as you enter into castles with 89% carry weight.

Skills are also different for WoE support priests compared to FS PvM priest. WoE builds place a greater emphasis on Sanctuary, Safety Wall, and Decrease Agility and a lesser emphasis on Heal, Magnificat and Resurrection.

Exorcist

Turn Undead (TU)

Base Stats at Level 99:

There are two variants for TU builds, dodge type and cast speed type.

The dodge type takes advantage of the -50% DEX debuff that occurs when Blessing is used on the undead, allowing them to reach 95% flee for otherwise difficult to dodge enemies like Anubis and Ancient Mummy. High flee also makes it easier for the priest to deal with other annoying enemies present on popular TU leveling maps like Mimic. The exact amount of AGI a dodge type TU priest gets depends on what flee equipment they have access to and how early they want to reach 95% flee in their build. Dodge type TU priests can support in parties, but not as well as FS PvM priests or the cast speed TU priest variant.

The cast speed type aims to be a sort of hybrid build which can still level effectively using TU solo, but also support well enough in parties or small groups. They rely more on the player's ability to cast and kite Anubis or Ancient Mummy than the dodge type when leveling with TU.

Skills for either variant are at the priest's discretion. Turn Undead, Gloria and Magnificat are mandatory skills, whereas Increase SP Recovery and higher ranks of Lex Divina can be helpful but will leave few points for important support skills if the priest has any interest in filling a support role in parties.

Magnus Exorcismus (ME)

Base Stats at Level 99:

  • STR: 1-10
  • AGI: 1-9
  • VIT: 1-36
  • INT: \~90-99 (aim for 105+ total int with bonuses)
  • DEX: 90-99
  • LUK: 1-9

The main concern of ME priests is their MATK (INT dependent) and cast time (DEX dependent). ME priests can opt to level completely on their own through the use of Safety Wall or Kyrie Eleison and killing smaller mobs of enemies, or with multiple clients relying on powerful buff spells like Kaahi and Resistant Souls to kill larger mobs of enemies. The amount of VIT a ME priest gets for their build depends largely on player preference and what kind of equipment they have access to like the acolyte card set (shown below) and Raydric Card. Another potential option for ME priests is to kill enemies with the Holy Light skill while under the effect of the Priest Spirit buff.

Regardless of how one levels a ME priest, it's important the player learn the technique of phen switching (see the Phen Switching Guide for more information) when leveling.

Tactics

Buffing

It is often useful for a priest to buff themselves before buffing their party. In doing so, the priest's buff is the first to wear off, and will instantly alert them that their party members' buffs will also wear off soon. This is especially useful for new priests who may forget to buff party members. There are exceptions, however, such as when one is low on SP. It's especially important that the priest does not forget to buff performers (Dancer and Bard), wizards and mobbers in the party.

Consider using the party window (alt + h default hotkey) for selecting and buffing party members rather than trying to find their person on the screen.

Offensive Buffs

Certain skills like Blessing, Cure, Resurrection and Status Recovery have detrimental effects rather than beneficial ones when used on Undead element enemies. Blessing in particular applies a powerful debuff that certain priests like the dodge type TU build (see above) take advantage of, just keep in mind that the debuff is the same regardless of what rank of Blessing is used on the undead, so it is usually ideal to save on SP by using rank 1 Blessing. See each of the aforementioned skills pages for more information on how they differ when cast on Undead element enemies.

Tapping

Damaging or using offensive skills on monsters are not the only things that count as a "tap" on a monster. Consider using skills like Cure, Lex Aeterna or Status Recovery on monsters when possible to boost the experience gain of your party.

If unfamiliar with the concept of tapping, see: Party#Experience_Setup for more information

Phen Switching

See the Phen Switching Guide for more information.

Lex Aeterna

Priests should remember that Lex Aeterna loses its rather long after-cast delay if used under the effect of A Poem of Bragi, to the point when it can be constantly cast. This is a great way to double the damage output of parties.

Battle priests should also make use of Lex Aeterna to effectively double the damage of one of their auto attacks as often as their SP allows.

TU Reflect

"Autocast skill on physical attack" properties on weapons such as Grand Cross can trigger from reflecting physical damage through the use of cards like High Orc Card and Orc Lord Card. Priests can use this relationship between reflect and autocast effects and gather mobs of Undead enemies, rapidly killing them through the autocasting of the Turn Undead skill thanks to the Grand Cross weapon.

Equipment

Note on Cards: Percent damage increase cards (Race/Element/Size) are additive with the same type of card (e.g. 2 Element damage cards is 20%+20%=40%) but multiplicative with different types of cards (e.g. 1 Element card and 1 Race card is 20%x20%=44%. So having variation of card types is better than using only the same type.

Battle Priest

Ideally your priority gear-wise should be to reach the amount of flee necessary to 95% dodge the monster you're hunting, followed by reaching the highest STR bonus you can, followed by maximizing AGI and attack speed. You may also consider using the morrigane's set (+2 STR, +9 LUK, +13 CRIT, +18 ATK, +13 perfect dodge, Occupies helm, garment and 2 accessory equipment slots)

Full Support - PvM

If you're expected to tank monsters (for a duo or small party) your gear should prioritize DEF and damage reduction. Consider stacking ranged damage reduction for certain maps (like bio3) or damage reduction even if you're not tanking if the monsters where you are partying are especially dangerous. If damage taken is not a concern, prioritize boosting your heal amount (Healing Staff shown below), reducing your cast time or increasing your SP recovery (if running out of SP is an issue).

Turn Undead

TU priests should choose equipment listed below based on whether they're dodge type or cast speed type.

Dodge type TU priests will prioritize reaching 95% flee (after taking Blessing's DEX debuff on Undead into account) first. Second, they'll prioritize being able to survive one max damage roll Sonic Blow or Dark Breath attack from an Anubis or Ancient Mummy (consult the stat calculator listed at the bottom of the page). Lastly, they'll prioritize maximizing TU success rate by increasing LUK and INT (weighed equally in the Turn Undead formula).

Cast speed type TU priests will prioritize being able to survive one max damage roll Sonic Blow or Dark Breath attack from an Anubis or Ancient Mummy first (consult the stat calculator listed at the bottom of the page). Second, maximizing TU success rate by increasing LUK and INT (weighed equally in the Turn Undead formula). Lastly, they'll prioritize maximizing cast time reduction (DEX).

Magnus Exorcismus

Overview

Currently the best setup for ME priests is to utilize the acolyte card set combo (+10 VIT, -10% cast time, -10% SP cost of skills, Reduces damage taken by demon and undead by 30%, Increase EXP gained by killing demon and undead by 5%, Occupies helm, accessory, armor and shield card slots) because majority of the areas a ME priest will farm include both demon and undead enemies. This will hold true well into the future until the Spiritual Ring item is released. If for whatever reason the ME priest does not want to use the acolyte card set, alternatives are listed below.
