Overview

Rogues faithfully continue the Thief traditions of subterfuge and skulduggery, the most notable additions being the skills Plagiarism and Gank. The first grants the class a unique versatility in copying offensive skills that hit them, and the second adds a free bonus to gathering loot while farming. Rogues also have fantastic PvP skills (Divest Tree), but these require a specialized build to use effectively (and isn't worth it since oRO PvP is pretty dead). As for gear, they have access to daggers, bows, swords, shields, and most armors. They also gain a couple Archer skills, should they opt to use a bow.

Jobchange Guide

See Rogue Job Change Guide for detailed information.

Changing into a Rogue from a Thief requires the player to complete a series of tasks at the Pharos Lighthouse (cmd_fild07 0, 0):

  • A Written Test
  • Item collection test
  • Maze test

Builds

Note: Builds are always subjective and by no means is this guide the final arbiter on stat distribution; always learn from the community and through personal experience. These builds represent the most common, cookie-cutter staples. Don't be afraid to deviate from the norm if it suits your unique ideas or play style.

ROratorio's CalcX is currently the best build/damage calculator for oRO, but be mindful that the damage calculations are not exact. Assume \~5% margin of error.

Note on Stats: Some stats are presented as "total"s (including buffs, gear, pets, and Job bonuses) because they give certain bonuses at specific increments.

  • STR - Significant melee ATK bonuses at increments of 10.
  • INT - SP Regen +1 at increments of 6.
  • DEX - Significant ranged ATK bonuses at increments of 10.

Regardless of build, most Rogues will use Plagiarism to copy either Raging Trifecta Blow (for auto-attacking) or Bowling Bash (for mobbing) (these both work with bows). These skills represent the best in what they do, and only niche builds will opt for something else.

Since Plagiarism skills can be easily overwritten, the Rogue Leveling page has an incomplete list of areas safe(ish) for keeping copied skills.

How to copy skills from another player - Use the "@duel" command to initiate a fight. Then "@invite \<name>" another character, who will use "@accept" to begin the duel. The opponent only has to land one attack with the relevant skill, and it will show up under the "Etc." tab in the Skills menu. When being attacked by a Monk, they only need one Spirit Sphere active to transfer Raging Trifecta Blow, regardless of actually landing any hits.

Dagger Gank

Recommended for players who - are new and need a cheap starting character; want to make extra money from monsters; have or are willing to make a Monk/Knight to copy skills from; enjoy the auto-attack blitz of having both Double Attack and Raging Trifecta Blow.

Stat Build:

Skill Build:

By far the most common build for the Rogue class, taking full advantage of the best skills available. It plays just like a Thief, with the added benefit of auto-cast Steal from Gank and extra damage from copied Raging Trifecta Blow. It can also mob effectively with Bowling Bash.

STR vs. AGI - While the extra FLEE is tempting, STR should usually be increased ahead of AGI. Killing enemies as quickly as possible is the goal of any PvM build, and getting those ATK bonuses is what will make the most difference. Prioritizing ASPD for maximum Gank potential is a common misconception with this class; killing more enemies will yield better loot.

DEX - Necessary to HIT things, but also adds a little ASPD. Be sure to note the FLEE of enemies in desired farming areas and stat accordingly. It's possible to find out hit rates using the calculator linked above.

Skills - It's recommended to max Plagiarism first, then Gank and Sword Mastery in order of preference. Snatch is a free Fly Wing. Mug is laughably useless. Sightless Mind is far inferior to a copied Bowling Bash, making Stalk similarly uninteresting. And Back Stab would be good if it wasn't so difficult to line up. In conclusion, the first three listed skills make up the core of this build, and all the rest are simply prerequisites for Plagiarism.

Sword Build Variant - If a player plans to level primarily using copied Bowling Bash, the following tweaks to the build are recommended: take level 10 Sword Mastery over Gank; sacrifice some AGI / DEX for INT (unless using an 4279.png Earth Deleter Card); use a Sword to avoid the Size damage penalty vs. Medium / Large of Daggers.

Support characters - A Monk / Knight to copy the relative skills from. Priest and an Endow Sage are always useful.

  • Gear: STR / ATK / AGI / FLEE enhancing cards and equipment. Dagger-type weapon.
  • Cost: One of the cheaper classes, only really needing a decent weapon.

Bow

Recommended for players who - already have an Archer character to transfer equipment; already have or are willing to make a Monk / Knight / Archer to copy skills from; love the play style of an Archer but think Rogues look cooler (they do).

Stat Build:

  • STR: 1
  • AGI: 80-99
  • VIT: 1
  • INT: 9 or 18/24/30/36/42/48/54 total
  • DEX: 110/120/130 total
  • LUK: 1

Skill Build:

For players with an Archer character, this build is convenient for reusing equipment. A Bow rogue functions like an Archer, with some advantages and disadvantages. They don't get Owl's Eye, but they can copy traditionally melee-only skills like Bowling Bash, and have substantial FLEE bonus from Increase Dodge. And for the auto-attacking play style, the 4117.png Sidewinder Card and Raging Trifecta Blow will significantly improve damage output.

DEX vs. AGI - DEX is the primary damage stat for bows and also adds HIT, so it should be increased far ahead of AGI. FLEE is less necessary with ranged attacks.

INT - If you want to level using Bowling Bash (unless using an 4279.png Earth Deleter Card) or Double Strafe, it's recommended to increase INT for more SP.

Skills - As stated in the preceding build, most skills are only useful so far as they unlock Plagiarism, which should still be kept at 10 since it allows for the most versatility. Vulture's Eye is a must. Double Strafe can be copied with Plagiarism, so skills in the former aren't necessary. Gank can't be used with ranged weapons.

Support characters - A Monk / Knight / Archer to copy the relative skills from. A Priest is always useful.

Note on BB - Even with a bow, it is considered a melee attack, doesn't consume arrows, and doesn't apply arrow effects (so an Endow will be necessary for elemental damage).

  • Gear: DEX / ATK / AGI / INT enhancing cards and equipment. Bow-type weapon.
  • Cost: One of the cheaper classes, only really needing a decent weapon. Free if you already have an Archer.

PvP/WoE

Note: as of May 2020, PvP on oRO is usually dead, and Rogues don't play well into the current WoE meta. It's recommended to use a PvM build to transcend as quickly as possible.

The PvP oriented Rogue uses the Bow build as a template, deviating to invest in all Divest skills and sacrificing AGI for VIT (ideally 100 total). DEX should be maxed to have the highest chance of Divesting. Double Strafe can be used to finish a stripped opponent. Since skills will be overwritten during PvP, Plagiarism should be taken down to 5 to instead max Double Strafe.

Equipment

Note on Cards: Percent damage increase cards (Race/Element/Size) are additive with the same type of card (e.g. 2 Element damage cards is 20%+20%=40%) but multiplicative with different types of cards (e.g. 1 Element card and 1 Race card is 20%x20%=44%. So having variation of card types is better than using only the same type.

Note on Costumes: if you like the way an item looks but have better gear, you may be able to turn it into a cosmetic item.

Note on Headgear: some items don't drop from monsters and are only obtained by completing quests.

Falcon Muffler Set

As an upgrade from the unslotted Pantie/Undershirt set, the Falcon Muffler Set provides better general farm sustainability through it’s great DEF, a small but noticeable HP and SP pool increase, and additional FLEE and Perfect Dodge chance that mobbing and autoattacking Rogues alike will appreciate. While both Falcon Muffler and Fricco’s Shoes having no card slots makes them a rather unappealing option later on, Odin’s itself remains fairly useful and versatile, thanks to it’s presence in multiple equipment sets frequently used by other classes (particularly Monk and Knight, which Rogue players may decide to create for Plagiarism purposes).

Magni's Cap Set

This straightforward set combines 2 individual equipment pieces that a Rogue is already likely to use with Odin’s Blessing in order to improve their strengths, giving the user additional DEF, MDEF and STR.

Weapon

The following DEF-piercing daggers are very powerful for the price, providing a substantial damage increase against frequently farmed enemies (such as High Orcs, or Demon Funguses) that's usually only surpassed by the Ice Pick or a fully slotted and refined Gladius/Main Gauche:

<!-- -->
- 1230.png Ice Pick - ATK +80, damage scales with target's DEF

<!-- -->
- 1108.png Blade [4] - ATK +53 (for Bowling Bash vs. Medium enemies) - 2 Racial damage cards / 2 Elemental damage cards - Damage vs. Race / Element +20% (+96% total with 2/2 card split)

<!-- -->
- 13405.png Curved Sword [2] - ATK +125, Attack Speed + 10% (for Raging Trifecta Blow users) - 4117.png Sidewinder Card - Enables Double Attack - 1 Racial damage or Elemental damage card - Damage vs. Race / Element +20%

<!-- -->
- 1309.png Orcish Axe [4] - ATK +75 (for Bowling Bash vs. Large enemies) - 2 Racial damage cards / 2 Elemental damage cards - Damage vs. Race / Element +20% (+96% total with 2/2 card split)
